Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant Press Tour/浜岡原子力発電所プレスツアー(海外メディア向け)

See the completion of 1.6-kilometer-long breakwater wall Capable of withstanding a 19-meter-high tsunami and implementations of variety of counter-earthquake/tsunami measurements

JFJN plans an international press tour into Hamaoka nuclear power plant in OMAEZAKI, Shizuoka Prefecture–Chubu Electric Power Co. with the completion of a 22-meter-high tsunami defense barrier.

The plant operator says the 1.6-kilometer-long breakwater wall is capable of withstanding a 19-meter-high tsunami from a so-called Nankai Trough mega-quake, which is expected to strike the area.

Chubu Electric shut down the plant’s two active reactors in May 2011 at the instruction of the prim minister, Naoto Kan, in the aftermath of the tsunami-triggered Fukushima nuclear accident that March.

The barrier was subsequently constructed as part of the plant’s 150 billion yen ($1.25 billion) renovation project to strengthen its tsunami resistance. Including other anti-earthquake and tsunami measurements on construction implementation into reactors, buildings, facilities, the cost will amount to about 300 billion yen.

Following the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident, they have been implementing voluntary countermeasures for tsunami and severe accidents, and introducing additional measures in light of the New Regulatory Requirements so as to build up their safety.
“No More Fukushima Daiichi Accidents”

Currently 3,800 people are working at the site of Hamaoka nuclear power plant. On a dairy basis, to reinforce the safety in response to the nuclear accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the emergency drills are being conducted per each unite on site.

Reinforcement projects of the plant’s No. 4 and No. 3 reactors are set to be finished in September 2016 and September 2017, respectively.
